Matching Vehicle to Caravan

Buying a 2cnd Hand Van, Buyer Beware

Matching Vehicle to Caravan

Always start with the Vehicles

GCM = GVM + ATM. What we mean by this is if the GCM is 6000kg and the GVM is 3200kg then allow for a caravan of maximum ATM of 2800kg.

6000kg = 3200kg + 2800kg

Too many set ups are over the legal GVM or GCM or Both.

KEEPING THEM HONEST

Just because a car has a Brake Towing Capacity of 3500kg, doesn't mean it can legally tow it. Same as previous. GVM of 3200kg BTC of 3500kg = 6700kg.

If GCM is 6000kg or even 6400kg.

Set up could still be overweight.

Records have proven that 80% of Set ups on the road are overweight, Illegal and in the case of an accident may not be insured.

It is the buyers responsibility to ensure that the secondhand caravan you are buying is within its legal weights.

Many older caravans and some new vans have a payload of 300-400 kg. This is not enough when you add 2 water tanks and 2 gas bottles. Most old vans have had items added after market and use up much of the payload. Don't be a victim, have the van weighed before you purchase.

Important Tow BAll Mass

Buying a 2cnd Hand Van, Buyer Beware

It is so important to have a Tow Ball Mass (TBM) that is not too low and is safe for towing. TBM of 8-12% of Actual ATM is acceptable. On several occasions we have been asked to weigh new caravans that have been hooked up by the retailer and sent home with either very light dangerous TBM or too heavy TBM. Please ensure that when you leave

GVM GCM AXLE Upgrade

GVM GCM AXLE Upgrade

In most cases a vehicle upgrade is required to be within your legal limits. However, a GVM upgrade alone is a big mistake, reason being, you will legally be able to carry an extra 600kg. But what your doing is increasing the weight on your rear axle and 90% of the time exceeding the Manufacturers specifications making it illegal and uninsured. Call us to discuss if your unsure.
